10th Anniversary

It was exactly ten years ago that RKA and I stood in a little brick church and took our vows.

The day before our wedding it poured with rain. Buckets of rain were streaming down from the sky and dripping off of the reception party tent that was set up at my aunt and uncle's rural property. My mom stood ironing table cloths and looking out the window with worry as the rain sheeted off the flaps of the tent. RKA himself shed a few tears about the impending "wet wedding". Somehow I was fairly oblivious. Of course I was hoping for sunshine, but I didn't want to waste too much energy on the weather. So we just waited.

That Saturday morning I woke up and looked out the window and was greeted by a brilliant blue sky filled with a brightly shining sun. I was ecstatic that we were going to have our elegant outdoor wedding reception just as we planned.

I have so many good memories of that day. I can so clearly remember standing there in that very hot church holding both of RKA's hands and looking straight into his eyes and knowing that things were going to work out for us.

Right after the ceremony it was a whirlwind of our closest friends and family wishing us well as the church bells rang. Then we headed to the reception in a little antique car just big enough to fit us and my maid of honour and RKA's best man.

The weather held out for us and the outdoor reception was beautiful. The night stayed warm, the stars shone brightly and the bugs stayed away. My brother kept things rolling as the MC and somehow my dad got a hold of the microphone - twice! The dancing went on long into the night, after RKA and I had driven off.

It was an incredible start to our life together. Having all of our loved ones there supporting us and celebrating with us meant so much. Now ten years later we realize what some of those things which we were vowing really meant. Our decade has not been without its rain but there has also been so much sunshine.

Yesterday, we headed up to the OK for a night away to commemorate our tenth. It was an incredibly hot 36 degree day. We were sweltering quite like we were ten years ago in our wedding duds in that little church. We celebrated our anniversary on a lakeside patio of a historic hotel. It was so quaint sitting under white umbrellas overlooking the dock and the sparkling lake.

We watched an awesome sunset as huge grey clouds rolled in against a pink sky. Then we were treated to an incredible lightning show that lasted the whole evening. The entire patio of on-lookers was captivated by the light show. The sounds of chatter and clinking glasses would be suddenly interrupted by yellow flashes reflected in the lake and audible gasps from the crowd. At one point, RKA actually clapped when a lightning bolt cracked against the now dark sky and then spiked down onto the glassy surface of the lake. I realized that there is no one else who I would rather experience a storm with.

I love storms. But my absolute favourite part of the weather show was when the thunder came. It shook the wood-planked patio and warned of the rain that was to come. We ordered dessert, waiting for the rain, daring the rain to come. It finally came down in big warm drops and it was actually quite nice. It also brought that summer rain smell that seems to promise more sunshine. But if anything, we have learned that marriage is not just about sunshine. Holding hands during the storms is where the vows come in.

A Day at the Beach

Photobucket

In Ruby's words, "It sure was a nice sunny day, today!" She is so right. We had a very nice day at the beach. In retrospect, I think that it was actually a little bit relaxing. There is something so zen about playing with sand and water - even for Mommy! After over three hours I reluctantly dragged them off the beach to head home for naptime.

Roughin' It!

Photobucket

Do you remember your first camp-out? I can't recall my first camping experience but I am sure that I will always remember our little family's first camp-out. It was a whole lot of fun packed into less than 24 hours. It all started with B waking up at 6:30am on Saturday morning. By 8:30 when R and RKA were awake I had hatched the idea to actually go to a campground (we had been planning to camp in the backyard). By 10am our car was packed and we were headed to Harrison.

By noon we had struck out at three different campgrounds, RKA and I were testy and the kids were ready to get out of the over packed car. We found a spot near the swimming lagoon and unloaded one red wagon, two eager kids and tons of sand and water toys. It was a great afternoon at the beach topped off with rainbow ice cream cones so big that they were dripping faster than the kids could eat them.

It really was fun but there was a question hanging in the air all afternoon - where were we going to pitch our tent??? We took one more stab at the provincial campground but had no luck. We reluctantly headed home to unpack our car and camp in our backyard. But we had one more try...Kilby. Crisp clean Harrison Bay, train bridge nestled between lush green mountains...such a gorgeous spot.

The campground at Kilby was also full, but the ranger dude must have took one look at our jam-packed car and our kids' expectant faces and he couldn't turn us away. He let us camp practically on the beach for $10. Look at these happy faces! It was the ideal spot for us.
Photobucket

It even had a hammock on the beach. How fun is that?

So at 4:30 pm RKA and I unpacked our car, pitched our tent, and inflated our air mattress while the kids jumped on the air mattress, frolicked on the beach, and swung in the serendipitous hammock. Okay, so RKA did most of the former while I was supervising the latter but we were both contributing, right!

Photobucket

By 6:30pm we were all starving so we rocked it out caveman style and collected rocks to build a fire pit and started a fire with twigs (and old coupons found in the car). R thought that building the rock fire pit was the most fun part about camping. Don't worry, we did have a bundle of $10 firewood from the General Store to keep it going!

Photobucket

Of course, dinner was roasted hot dogs and s'mores. (I wonder, is that just a Canadian phenomenon or is it the universal camping menu ?)

By 9:30pm the kids were sleeping and RKA and I spent a couple of hours around the fire catching up. We flopped down on the family air mattress at midnight where we spent several hours tossing and turning with R & B in between us. It was simultaneously so cozy and so uncomfortable!

Not to worry, it did not last long. When the 4am train came whistling through the mountains it felt like it rumbled right through our tent. It woke the kids up and when they saw that they were still camping they were so excited! They had a little dance party on the air mattress waking us up immediately and shortly thereafter the entire campground. By 5am our tent was collapsed, our air mattress was deflated, and our car was packed and we headed back to the comforts of home!

Character.

Photobucket

Most would agree that if you surveyed our family and friends you would find many colourful characters among the group. Not to name any names but we do have our fair share of individuals with their own unique flavour. It is actually RKA's individuality that I first was drawn to. There is something to be said to marching to the beat of your own drum. Thinking outside the box. Daring to be different. Okay, so now you may be picturing piercings in weird places but really I am just talking about having the character to know who you are and to not apologize for it. I guess it takes a lot of self confidence to have character. Here's to hoping that this little character continues to develop his self confidence as he grows. So far I would describe his character as adventurous, curious, fearless, sensitive, and loyal. Oh yeah, and hilarious. He is 19 months old now and just this morning jumped out of his crib, opened his door, pitter-pattered right beside my sleeping head and very proudly said, "Hiiii!". He now calls his sister, "Bee" and is constantly asking for her if she is not around. He really looks up to her and tries to follow all of her dance moves. He is such an enthusiastic little character!

Sun & Fun

Summer has finally begun and we have been enjoying sizzling hot days and juicy cold watermelon.

This weekend we went to a family bbq at my aunt and uncle's property. The kids were thrilled to see cows there as we drove up their country driveway. The cows were very good natured about having their peaceful pasture invaded by these little on-lookers.

Shhh...don't scare the cows!

The Lake, Part Deux.

Being at the lake is always fun but being there with kids makes it even better...especially when it's these kids!

The bold...
Photobucket
The beautiful...
Photobucket
The brains...
Photobucket
The baby...
Photobucket
These four spent the entire weekend having a blast. Teeth were not necessarily brushed, hair was not exactly washed, and vegetables were not overly consumed. But when it comes to the stuff that matters to kids there were checks in every box.
They played mini-golf like it was hockey....
Photobucket
And got so soaked they wore their undies home from bumper boats...
Photobucket
Danced on the beach...
Photobucket
...and chucked so many rocks....
Photobucket
Napped in tandem...
Photobucket
Rode giant insects...
Photobucket
Earned their keep...
Photobucket
And just chilled together...

The Lake.

We reluctantly brought these lovely boots with us to the lake...
Photobucket

Photobucket

And yes, we did need them...
Especially on that first rainy afternoon spent on the throwing rocks in the lake...repeatedly...

One of us was crazy enough to jump in...

While others had the good sense to stay inside where it was warm and dry...

Some perched on the porch...

While others found themselves shirtless on the lakeshore...

But in the end we all found ourselves cozied up on a raft...huddled together for warmth!
